Message1. utter new comer to linux

I am trying to get going with wx on mandrake 9.2.  I have been using it on windows and now want to try porting my code.

I have downloaded and unzipped the wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.gz
so that I now have wxGTK-2.4.2 directory sitting there doing nothing.
Basically I don't know what to do next.

One thing I tried to get something going was "make poem" from inside demos/poem/
Of course "#include <wx/wxprec.h>" doesn't work as it doesn't know where it is.  And all the nested includes are wrong aswell.

Is there an environment variable for include paths?

What ide do you recommend for getting this all nice and convenient?

THanks in advance,

Bruce

Hi!
Well, first of all it sounds like you untared the archive and then... well, nothing :)
On Linux you will have to compile the libraries yourself, there is no precompiled "pack" or archive, at least none that I heard of. Check the INSTALL file located somewhere in your wx directory, this contains the needed info. Normally this should be an easy task like:
(in wx dir)
./configure --with-GTK (add other stuff here, call "configure --help" for all args)
(let configure run, this may take a while)
make
(let make do the job)
su
(type admin password)
make install

Once finished check if "wx-config" is found and if you can compile the samples.
For the IDE I'd suggest Anjuta, a very nice IDE with support for wxWidgets project templates. KDevelop seems to be famous too, but I never tried it.

MinGWStudio (both Windows and Linux versions) also has support for wxWidgets projects.
