Message1. Trouble With Loading Bitmap Image

I am having trouble trying to load a bitmap image for some reason. It compiles and runs and then says cannot load bitmap image blah blah. Im loading it with

wxBitmap bmp;
bmp = (wxBITMAP(directory path));

Am I doing something wrong here?
